The Citizenship Amendment Act was passed by Lok Sabha on December 10, 2019 and was passed by Rajya Sabha on December 11, 2019. The Citizenship Amendment Act was signed by Honorablr Prime minister on December 12, 2019.
Under Citizenship Amendment Act Hindu, Budh, Sikh, Jain, Parsi And Zorostrian Citizens from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh arriving to India before December 31, 2014 will be given Indian Citizenship.
Earlier it was mandatory for a person to live in India for a period of 11 years to get Indian Citizendship. This period was reduced to 5 years.Therefore Hindu, Budh, Sikh, Jain, Parsi and Zoroastrian refugees who came to India before December 21, 2014 are given Indian Citizenship. These refugees were subjected to religious fanaticism and their human rights were violated. Arrangements were Made in Citizenship Act such that if these refugees are living in India for more than 5 years they will be provided citizenship. Summary of this act is that by this act Hindu, Budh, Sikh, Jain, Parsi And Zorostrian refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who came before December 31, 2014 are alloted Indian Citizenship.
